Early Life and Education
Francisco Balsemão was born on September 1, 1937, in Lisbon, Portugal. He received his law degree from the University of Lisbon and began his career as a journalist in the early 1960s.
Journalism Career
Balsemão quickly rose through the ranks of Portuguese journalism, becoming editor of the influential newspaper Expresso in 1973. Under his leadership, Expresso became known for its critical coverage of the authoritarian regime of Marcelo Caetano and played a key role in the Portuguese Revolution of 1974.
After the revolution, Balsemão founded the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD). He served as Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Francisco Sá Carneiro and later as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985.
Prime Minister of Portugal
As Prime Minister, Balsemão oversaw Portugal's entry into the European Community and implemented a series of economic reforms. He also played a key role in the country's transition to democracy.
Return to Journalism
After leaving office, Balsemão returned to journalism, becoming president of the Impresa media group. He has continued to be a vocal commentator on Portuguese politics and society.
